Jets week 1 Recap: A thrilling overtime victory ruined by injury
Game Recap:
Well, Jets fans, the Jets are back. In an exhilarating Monday Night Football showdown, our beloved New York Jets managed to snatch a thrilling overtime victory from the jaws of the Buffalo Bills, winning 22-16. The game had it all, from an undrafted rookie, Xavier Gipson, returning a punt for a walk-off touchdown in OT after our defense forced a crucial 3-and-out to kick off the extra period.
At some points, it seemed the Bills had us cornered, even boasting a 10-point lead. But the Jets capitalized on four Josh Allen turnovers, rallying to take a late 16-13 lead before eventually winning in OT. As exciting as the win was, it was nowhere near the biggest story of the extremely painful night...
Big Story: Aaron Rodgers' Season-Ending Injury:
The biggest takeaway of the night was the injury to Aaron Rodgers, our star quarterback. It wasn't just any injury; he ruptured his left Achilles on his fourth play of his first drive. Now, we face the grim possibility that his career might be over. At nearly 40 years old, and considering the long and grueling recovery from an Achilles injury, the future is uncertain for the veteran quarterback. We think he'll come back but at the same time there is a chance he retires
Jets Defense Shines:
On a brighter note, let's talk about our defense! Last season, the one criticism we faced was the lack of forced turnovers. Well, the tides seem to have turned. Jordan Whitehead, in particular, had a standout performance, grabbing three interceptions and already more than doubled his career high. Michael Clemons contributed by forcing a crucial fumble.
Positives:
1. Jets Defense Stepped Up:
Our defense truly stole the show. DJ Reed raised some eyebrows when he said our defense has the potential to be on the same level as the legendary '85 Bears. We gave a top-tier quarterback like Josh Allen a tough time, forcing numerous turnovers and forcing him to scramble more than Bills fans would want him to. Quincy Williams deserves special mention, delivering a stellar performance with ten tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass defense. As mentioned above, Jordan Whitehead was stellar with his three interceptions and DJ Reed came up with some big pass break ups down the stretch. In total, our defense produced five sacks and nine QB hits and remains one of the most daunting pass rushes in the league.
2. Garrett Wilson Shines:
The reigning OROY might have just made the catch of the year with his incredible touchdown, tipping the ball to himself not once, but twice before hauling it in. If we want a consistent offense, we need to find ways to get the ball in his hands as he is one of the best playmakers in the league.
3. Breece Hall's Return:
We knew coming into the game there was going to be a ramp up period for star running back Breece Hall and that he would be on a pitch count for the foreseeable future. Last night he only played 17 snaps but he made the most of it, amassing 147 yards, including an electrifying 83-yard run. As he fully ramps up, we should expect to see him turn these long runs into touchdowns as he gains his stamina and full burst back.
Negatives:
1. Zach Wilson's Limited Passing:
On the downside, Zach Wilson, barely attempted any deep throws as OC Nathaniel Hackett wanted to reduce any potential turnovers. Most completions were screens or passes at the line of scrimmage. He ended up going 14/21 for 140 yards, with 1 TD and 1 INT.
2. Dalvin Cook Struggles
Dalvin Cook was expected to fill in for Breece Hall but averaged a mere 2.5 yards per carry with 33 yards on 13 carries. Cook was given about 8 million dollars to help fill in while Hall returned from his ACL injury, but given the current situation and Cooks production last night the Jets might seriously re-evaluate taking the training wheels off Breece.
3. Sauce Gardner's Tough Night:
Reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year, Sauce Gardner, had a rough first game in his sophomore season. Allen had a passer rating over 118 when targeting Gardner, and Diggs had his number, with 5 catches on 6 attempts against him with no pass breakups for Gardner.
4. Offensive Line Woes:
One of the biggest questions coming into the season was can the offensive line keep Rodgers upright. Our offensive line allowed 12 pressures and 4 QB hits, a concerning near 50% pressure rate on roughly 25 pass attempts (22 official pass attempts and 3 sacks), we need better protection. Yes Duane Brown has barely practiced and Mekhi Becton has barely played RT, but bottom line is they need to be better.
Jets QB Options with Rodgers Out:
Let's address the elephant in the room—Aaron Rodgers is out for the season. It's a back breaking blow that destroys our super bowl hopes, but here's the reality: Zach Wilson is our only option. The other available QBs are available for a reason—Matt Ryan got benched, Wentz had his struggles and was benched the past two years, and Flacco didn't look great last year.
Additionally, Coach Hackett runs a complex offense, making it nearly impossible for a QB to step in mid-season and build chemistry with the starters while learning the playbook. Wilson will be our starter, and he needs support from his cast, especially getting the ball to Garrett Wilson and ensuring Breece Hall is at full strength. Wilson also needs to show that he can consistently make the right reads on intermediate passes to stop defenses from stacking the box and blitzing every play.
In conclusion, while the defense showed they can keep us in any game, our offensive line needs to step up, and Zach Wilson must protect the ball. It's going to be a challenging season, but the Jets can still make the playoffs.
